Nepal is the poorest country in Asia and the 15th poorest in the world. The poverty of some excluded ethnic groups in Nepal is almost double the national average.
The country is blessed with natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage but has undergone great political and social change including the Nepalese royal massacre in 2001. In November 2006, a deal was struck between the government and the Maoists ending ten years of civil war during which 13,000 people were killed. Following the constituent assembly elections in April 2008, in which the Maoists won the largest number of seats, the monarchy was abolished. The situation in Nepal remains fragile, with basic needs such as strikes and power blackouts, a loss of tourism income, corruption and potential earthquakes. Serious issues with human trafficing of women and children. Many people are dealing with Health problems relating to violence, poverty and stress. The organizations involved in the AWB training are directly working with these issues.

About Acupuncturists without Borders: Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) vision is to foster the creation of stable, peaceful global communities through its community-based acupuncture services and training which interrupt the cycles of unresolved trauma. Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) has been working in Haiti, Hurricane Katrina, Chile, and other places of trauma, but they also work to train before disasters, or in places of chronic conditions through the World Healing Exchange Program (WHEP) AWB will be in Nepal to offer the first community acupuncture for trauma training this August. The people of Nepal have been impacted by a decade of civil strife.
AWB is also sending an international WHEP delegation to Mongolia to work with traditional healers.
We are hoping to host a similar AWB program here in Hawaii in 2012 with our community of multi-cultural health practitioners.
