For the sixth year in a row, the Hawai`i Healing Garden State wide Festival launches on Kauai

What might not be known is that the origin of the Statewide Healing Garden Festival was incubated and seeded right here on Kauai.   6 years ago on Kauai with the support of Hawaii Health Guide and the Kauai County commitment to health and wellness for Kauai's people and visitors and a committed community. The Garden Island continues to lead the way with innovative solutions and and independent can-do approach to creating a sustainable and thriving healthy community.

We are pleased to announce the 2010 Healing Garden Festival launching on Kauai Saturday JUNE 19, 2010 at the Kilohana Plantation. Followed by several days of workshops, tours and classes. The Festival continues on to the Big Island in July, and Oahu in Sept.

More details and full festival schedule: http://www.HawaiiHealingGarden.com

As Hawai`i's only statewide collaborative health and green festival, the event will provide the opportunity for residents and visitors to "enjoy a dynamic series of multicultural events exploring healthy living in Hawai`i," said co-founder Katie Fisher.

Fisher, along with co-founder Michael Saiz, are the backbone behind the online Hawai`i Health Guide, from which the healing festivals were formed. Debuting on Kauai six years ago, the Garden Festival was the result of "finding a common denominator among people of different cultures," Fisher explained. Essentially the co-founders wanted to know what was a collective topic that the people from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Hawai`i talk about. The answer: medicinal plants.

This common thread tied together Hawai`i's Polynesian, Hawaiian, Chinese, Ayurvedic and Filipino cultures, enabling the sharing of the cultural use of medicinal plants and healing arts.

The vision became to share knowledge of Hawaii's rich botanical treasures and cultural traditions through the vehicles of educators, health practitioners, botanists, gardeners, cultural practitioners, health food dietitians and chefs. Fisher and Saiz then swept up local artists, musicians and performers to form an all-encompassing educational health fair.

Standard events of the Garden Festival include cultural healing arts demonstrations, concerts, healthy food, workshops, tours, Hawaiian cultural immersion and cooking classes. Some of the highlights of the festival: herbalists, acupuncture, massage; worm farming; Little Green Thumbs children's' programs;  edible lei contest; unique products and plants; a  Kauai Fashion show featuring locally made clothing and  cultural entertainment.

The seeds of the Healing Garden Festival were planted on Kauai 6 years ago, festival have spread over the years as residents of each island have partnered with festival coordinators to develop specific participatory exhibits, location-based tours and specialized island workshops.

Fisher noted that the festival would not be what it is today without the botanical gardens, organic farms, restaurants, universities, organizations, private residents and businesses from the community. LIke last year, this year's Healing Garden Festival will be held at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue.

"We received a lot of positive feedback, from that location last year " said Fisher,   "We had a lot of people come out to the festival, both residents and visitors, even the Mayor came to give awards to the winners of the all local meal contest.

A highlight this year is the  Art & Eco Fashion show featuring Kauai inspired fashions.

The Edible, Medicinal or Recycled Lei contest is also a big draw, with a grand prize of $100 offered for the best overall entry.

This year the festival, which will be divided into Saturday's Festival Celebration followed by over 8  Workshops and Tours including herbal hikes, an underwater jujitsu class, Amazon herbs, a women's self defense class, cooking classes, a mantra class for agriculture, an organic  farm tour, and  will continue through the week will feature opportunities to study a number of topics more in depth with our local and mainland workshop educators.

A highlight of this year's festival will be the "Amazon Medicine Workshop: Healing the Heart of the Jungle," with ethno-botanical researcher Jerome River Black of Amazon Therapeutic Laboratories. Black will teach about the botanical medicines of the Amazon rainforest and Andes Mountains, detailing the healing secrets he's discovered from the region. Black will offer an interactive and informative workshop, touching upon specific modalities and the traditional medicine treatments such as intense immunities for therapeutic support, nourishing tonics and first aid remedies.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to sample and familiarize themselves with herb extracts and formulas from the founder of Herbs America and Maca Magic --- the first group to cultivate and distribute live maca root plants in the United States. [Black's free presentation will take place on Saturday and a half day workshop will take place Monday for $35.

Th $5 entry fee to  Saturdays event includes  with the Healthy Hawai`i Expo, featuring healthy and green vendors, the All Kauai Art and Eco Fashion show, music and food demos, natural products and organic goods, kids healthy activiites, Van GO and other art projects, and all speaking and educational classes and mini workshops. Nonprofit organizations will display information booths and educational experts will present short lectures.
For Fisher and Saiz, the Garden Festival's focus on the many multicultural traditional uses of medicinal and nutritional plants through personal health and healing is what they hope attendees will take away from the event.

"We hope that Kauai people and visitors alike really gets something out of this," said Fisher who feels the festival will empower the community with positive attitudes and behavior while nurturing a sustainable relationship with the environment. "We really want to convey [the idea] that food and plants are medicine. and to show case what is happening right here on Kauai.

The community is invited to collaborate, support and participate. Presentation and workshop proposals are now being accepted for consideration in the festival programs. Exhibitor booths are available for businesses and non-profit organizations. Volunteers are invited to help with organizing, planning and festival day activities, speaker support and workshops. Booth packets and event expo information is available on-line at http://www.HawaiiHealingGarden.com or by calling 808-638-0888.
