Aloha airlines announced it will be ceasing both interisland and mainland-Hawaii passenger operations as of March 21 2008.

In 2002, publically traded Hawaiian and privately owned Aloha airlines were both in bancruptcy and announced their intent to merge. During that time, interisland airfares sky rocketed between $79-105 for interisland flights and soured public support for inter-island "monopoly"
Hawaiian, which had survived bankruptcy in the early 1990s, again sought bankruptcy protection in 2003 and emerged after trimming costs and reorganizing its debts in 2005. Since then, Hawaiian has been more profitable of the two, adding new planes into service, expand service to the Mainland and Asia and dutting costs by outsourcing the reservations and customer service to the Philipines.
Aloha also went into bankruptcy in late 2004 but did not cease service. After concessions from pilots and employees, he airlines emerged from bancruptcy protection in 2006.
Mesa airlines entered Hawaii with go! and introduced $39 inter-island fares, sparking nearly two years of interisland flights, at times as low as $9.00.
Hawaiian dominates the long-haul market, moving 2.4 million passengers to and from Hawaii in 2006, second only to United Airlines. Aloha ranked ninth, with about 550,000 passengers.
Most airlines run on leased aircraft
Saltchuk Resources Inc. announced Thursday that it has provided a letter of intent to Aloha Airlines to buy the assets, equipment and service lines of Aloha Air Cargo. They are also the owners of Young Brothers and Hawaiian Tug & Barge,
For standby travel on Hawaiian Airlines, available space permitting and free of charge:
- Hawaiian Airlines will permit no-charge, standby, space available, day-of- original travel for some flights on Monday, March 31 and all flights on April 1, 2, and 3, 2008.
- For Aloha Airlines ticketed travel on Monday, March 31, 2008, Hawaii to U.S. Mainland only travel will be available on a standby basis on Hawaiian Airlines.
- For interisland and U.S. Mainland Aloha Airlines ticketed travel on Tuesday, April 1 through Thursday, April 3, 2008, all ticket holders have the option to stand by on Hawaiian Airlines flights.
- If you were scheduled to depart on the eligible dates listed above, you may go to the airport only on your original day of departure.
- Customers will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis based on available seats 15 minutes prior to each scheduled departure.
- Please assist us by bringing your Aloha Airlines paper ticket or electronic ticket confirmation to the airport on your ticketed day of departure.
- Standby, space available travel for interisland and Mainland cities applies only for the date of original travel. It is offered one trip at a time, no round trip considerations.
- Passengers may check baggage on a standby, space available basis.
- Unfortunately, Hawaiian Airlines cannot guarantee that you will be able to find an open seat within a reasonable period of time due to high passenger volumes. Please keep this in mind when considering the standby option.
